I Tried to Get Claude to Delete My Duplicate Files. It Couldn't But What It Did Instead Was Better

After clearing my Downloads folder, I got ambitious.

I asked Claude to go into my Documents and delete all the duplicate files. Tidy everything up properly.

It couldn't do it not in the way I expected. Claude explained it can't permanently delete files directly, because permanent deletion without a safety net is genuinely risky and it won't do that without giving you a chance to check first.

But here's what it did instead.

It created a subfolder called "Delete" inside my Documents and moved every duplicate into it. Neat, organised, ready for me to check then move to trash myself whenever I was confident.

A job that would have taken me hours, manually checking file by file, done in 2 minutes. I just had to drag one folder to the bin.

Honestly? The fact that it didn't just delete everything was reassuring, not disappointing. It's doing the heavy lifting while keeping me in control of the final decision. That feels like exactly the right balance.

What I'm learning is that AI agents work best when you let them do the organising, and keep the irreversible bit for yourself.
